Anger Hurts

Trish Taylor

What are you really angry about?

When you focus your energy on the emotion of anger, it hurts you emotionally and then can ultimately also damage you physically. When other people are angry with you, you must remember that it is always about them and never about you.
We meet people every day who are hurt and may react to us in a mean or angry way. It can be difficult to get past it. Learning to handle our own emotions and be the bigger person is tough. We can however learn to do it.
Are you angry because people don’t want to do things the way you do, because they have different views from you? If another person wants to harm you, damage you or steal from you, then anger may be appropriate. If however your anger is really about you and your values then it may be time to rethink things.
I regularly have conversations with people who are struggling with anger or frustration. When we look closely at the emotion, it is often about us, our values and our desire to control the narrative or situation.

I Was ‘That Horrible Woman’

It resonates with me because I spent a lot of time being, or appearing to be angry. When working in a children’s home I was once referred to as ‘that little woman who is always shouting’ and as a staff representative fighting for workers rights I was ‘that horrible woman’ or words to that effect. I was doing my best to do my job and needed to be assertive. I didn’t know how to present myself without appearing angry. I am still learning to take a step back. I now recognize that I cannot make everyone  agree with me or like me and I have stopped trying. I also do my best to check my own emotions when dealing with others who are angry.
